Upcoming Events in the 949 and 714
Late summer into fall is the best time in Southern California. The weather is still warm, all the students are back in school, tourism sharply declines, the surf is traditionally at its best and there are cool events always popping up. Right off the bat, everyone needs to come down to the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Monday September 22nd. In conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation, we are trying to rally as many people as possible to appear in opposition of the 241 toll road in Southern Orange County. On the 22nd there is a pivotal meeting that needs as much supporter involvement as possible. Check out www.surfrider.org for all the 411 and detailed analysis of the 241 toll road proposition.
The annual gastronomic expose that is a “Taste of Newport” is coming once again to Fashion Island, September 19-21. For those that don’t know, it is like this: some of Orange County’s best eateries set up booths in a closed off street in Fashion Island offering up their best dishes. Add on live music by acts like UB40 and Third Eye Blind, then mix both those with several booze booths that serve the full cornucopiua of beer, wine and hard liquor……and you got a party. The only problem is the pretentiousness level of the crowd is usually off the charts. Here, this is for the locals: it is a combination of Javier’s in Newport Coast and Chronic Cantina in Costa Mesa. The only other drawback to this smorgasbord is that the lines to actually get food and drinks are ridiculously long and the overall prices are exorbitant. Lastly, from a guy’s perspective the best part of the whole ordeal is the undeniable female “talent”………always a grip of hot women in attendance. Log on to www.tasteofnewport.com for the breakdown.
On a decidedly different tip, Huntington Beach’s version of Oktoberfest appears for its annual incantation at Old World village, www.oldworld.ws, from September 7th through November 2nd. A chipped beer stein to the Taste of Newport’s fine crytsal martini glass, that is Old World’s Oktoberfest. Everything you would expect is here: brautwursts and sauerkraut, enough beer to get the whole state of California drunk, old men in disturbing lederhosen oufits, frauleins in blatantly revealing German bar maid skirt sets, the dreaded “Chicken Dance” and a welcomingly diverse crowd that Newport just does not have in its repertoire.
Miscellaneous activities on the horizon……………..Angel’s playoff baseball, they are the odds on favorite to win the World Series…………..Cosmic Creek Challenge surf contest September 30th at Salt Creek with a warm up party/concert with Donovan Frankenreiter at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Check www.thecoachhouse.com or www.killerdana.com for more info……………..VIP red carpet event at Sutra in Costa Mesa on Friday night September 19th featuring a live performance by Too Short. This is my pick of the weekend. Almost impossible to get in for most, being a known writer/journalist does have its perks some time.
Well, that is a wrap for now. Keep it locked for more Orange County enlightenment…….
